Indian Summer in Abkhazia: Weather, Prices and Autumn Sights

June 28, 2026 · Winter & New Year

People come to Abkhazia in autumn to avoid crowds and see the country without exhausting heat. In September and early October the air warms to 22–25 °C, the sea holds at around 20 °C — warm enough to swim, walk and go on excursions without discomfort.

At a glance

  • Season: late September — early October, «Indian summer»
  • Daytime: 22–25 °C, sea: ~20 °C
  • Tourist flow: low, prices below summer rates
  • Things to do: excursions, hiking, swimming, sightseeing
  • Key spots: Lake Ritsa, Gegsky Waterfall, Anakopia Fortress, New Athos Cave

Autumn weather — when to go

Late September and the first ten days of October are the optimal window. During the day a comfortable 22–25 °C, cooler in the evening but not cold. The sea has warmed over summer and doesn't cool down quickly, so swimming season formally continues. In the second half of October rain and colder spells are possible — check the forecast.

Lake Ritsa and Stalin's dacha

Lake Ritsa is a natural attraction that nearly everyone visiting Abkhazia sees. The water is clear, mountain forest lines the shores. A few metres from the lake is Joseph Stalin's dacha — a local historical landmark. The grounds impress with their size and design.

Gegsky Waterfall

Gegsky Waterfall is about 70 metres high. The water hits the ledges with such force that countless spray particles rise all around. In autumn, when there are few tourists, you can spend more time at the waterfall without rushing.

Anakopia Fortress

Anakopia Fortress was built in the 12th century. On the grounds there is a chapel and several towers offering panoramic views of the surroundings. In autumn, without summer heat, climbing to the fortress is physically easier.

New Athos Cave

New Athos Cave is equipped for tourists: a special bridge for walking, several halls, lakes lit by artificial light. A train runs between the halls — it's part of the route, not regular transport.

Budget: why autumn is cheaper

In autumn and spring the tourist flow is small, and prices are noticeably lower than in summer. This applies to accommodation, excursions and dining. If you want to save — plan your trip for this period.

An honest drawback

In autumn some beach infrastructure and seasonal cafes are already closed. There are fewer activities on the promenades than in summer. If nightlife and a packed evening programme matter to you — autumn may disappoint.
